Announcing the 16th Conference on Attention and Perception: Perceptual
Organization and Grouping (first announcement)

(June 25 - 26, 2012)

(第十六屆「注意力與知覺」學術研討會, 06.25-26, 2012,

嘉義民雄, 國立中正大學)

(Our most sincere apology if you receive more than one copy of this announcement.)

Dear A & P, Psychology, and Cognitive Science colleagues:

After a long and restful break, I hope you are like me and have been asking “when
and where will the next A & P be?” To answer that question, I am delighted to
announce that the 16th Conference on Attention and Perception (henceforth 16th A &
P)will take place on June 25th (Monday) and June 26th(Tuesday), 2012, again at the
campus of National Chung Cheng University in Min-Hsiung, Chiayi, Taiwan. (嘉義
民雄,國立中正大學). Professor Mary A. Peterson of University of Arizona (USA)
and Professor Rutie (Ruth) Kimchi of University of Haifa (Israel) are invited to
deliver keynote lectures in the conference. As the title theme suggested, this year’s A
& P is going back to the fundamental aspect of visual processing and examine how
perceptual organization and grouping can play an important role in many parts of
higher visual-cognitive processes.

Professor Peterson received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1984, working
with one of the grand perception masters, Julian Hochberg, and is currently Professor
in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Cognitive Science Program at
the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on visual cognition, in particular, on
the competitive processes involved in figure and ground assignment, the role of past
experience and context in perceptual organization, and the use of implicit measures
to index shape learning. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society and
of the American Psychological Association. She was Associate Editor of the Journal
of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance (1996-1999) and
is currently on the editorial boards of that journal and of Psychological Science.
You can find more information about Professor Peterson’s research interests and
accomplishments on her UoA website (http://www.u.arizona.edu/~mapeters/).

Professor Kimchi received her Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley
in 1982, working with one of the most prominent contemporary vision scientists,
Stephen Palmer, and is currently Professor in the Department of Psychology at
University of Haifa, Israel, and Director of the Max Wertheimer
Minerva Center for Cognitive Processes and Human Performance, and a Fellow
of the Association for Psychological Science. Her research also focuses on visual
cognition, in particular, the principles and the mechanisms underlying visual
perceptual organization. Using several different experimental paradigms Professor
Kimchi and her colleagues have attempted to shed light on the role of attention in
perceptual organization and ontogenesis of perceptual organization, among many
important issues implicating the structures provided by early perceptual processing.
You can find more information about Professor Kimichi’s research interests and
accomplishment on the website in University of Haifa (http://iipdm.haifa.ac.il/).

I’d like to invite each and every one of you who have been supporters to the past
A& Ps or who will become new supporters to the conference to actively participate
in the forthcoming 16th A & P. As we have done in the past, the invited speakers will
each give two talks over the course of two-day conference, in between we will have
papers submitted and accepted for presentation by scholars and graduate students
from Taiwan so that we can all get a chance to receive comments and/or suggestions
on our research work. We will have the official call-for-papers (CFP) and open-to-
registration either at the end of April or early May. To be sure, you will be reminded
the important dates for paper submission and registration when they’re official.

As part of the by-now well established tradition, your active participation will
be greatly appreciated and holds the key to yet another successful conference on
Attention and Perception. We are looking forward to seeing you again at this year’s A
& P.

Most sincerely,

Gary C.-W. Shyi (襲充文)
